Welcoming Winter

Thank you parents and teachers, who have invited me into your schools this winter. Being a part of your nonfiction and writing curriculum is an honor for me.

As we tug on woolen sweaters and sip mugs of warm tea, nature prepares for the coming cold in its own way. Winter is a peaceful time to walk in woods and meadows–and to take pictures, if you don’t mind frosty fingers. Here are a few of our family’s favorite snowy photos:

Autumn News and Notes

Thank you parents and teachers, who have invited me to present school programs. I am honored to  be a part of your nonfiction and writing curriculum.

Red-winged Blackbird Singing, Agelaius phoeniceus

This fall my family and I traveled to some lovely spots, including the Cape Cod National Seashore. As Massachusetts residents, we are fortunate to live near this intriguing place, which is beautiful any time of year. Here are a few photos from our trips:

We found this Fowler’s Toad leaning on the beach grass.
A frolicking humpback greets whale watchers.
Want proof that whales are mammals and not fish? Here is the blowhole through which it breathes air.
How does this horseshoe crab keep track of its ten legs? That bump on the top of the shell is its right eye!
Doesn’t this Painted Turtle look snooty, as it points its nose toward the sun?
Here's a little nature lover.

Author School Visits 2012-13

Happy New School year! The arrival of fall is always exciting. I am anticipating another rewarding year meeting parents, teachers, students, and revisiting friends. Image

Last year, when I wasn’t visiting schools, I had adventures in Spain, the Canary Islands, and several national parks in the United States. Here are a few photos:

Is this a ghost in the Alhambra Palace in Granada?
Montana Blanca, on the Canary Island of Tenerife, was an awe-inspiring place.
We met this Barbary Macaque on the Rock of Gibraltar. This is before it snatched our son’s lunch.
Here’s one hitching a ride down the rock.
This is Chimney Rock on Nebraska’s Oregon Trail. I tried growing these sunflowers in our yard, but someone ate them! :- <
My! What big claws you have!

Market Basket and the BFG

I see her as I steer my cart toward her register . . .

Standing before me is a Quentin Blake caricature sprung from Roald Dahl’s mind.  Atop her head, a dusty wig clings like a sickly rodent. The breadth of her shoulders must  require her to pass sideways through doors. Without greeting me, she begins scanning my items and batting them down the belt. BOINK! BOFF! As my bananas bounce by, she pins me with a glare to indicate that she has finished. I hand her my card. When she returns it with the receipt I smile and venture a “thank you.” The cashier pauses, taking my measure, and then gives a guttural response that does not involve lip movement. Maybe I have cheered her with my courtesy and perhaps she feels bad about her grumpiness, because as I wheel away she tosses me one friendly tidbit–she does not tell me to have a great day.
