Although I grew up in an apartment in Boston, much of my adult life has been spent as a naturalist and a photographer exploring the outdoors and visiting historic places. During these adventures I have witnessed many splendors, such as mountain goats clambering up cliffs and clouds of bats drifting from caves. At night I have listened to the splashing of fishing alligators and to the echoing trills of coyotes. I have looked out from Lady Liberty’s torch onto New York Harbor and have traced the trails made by the ancient Anasazi. In addition to these experiences, I have a biology degree and was an educator in Massachusetts for ten years.
Not surprisingly, many of my books focus on nature and historical topics. I also enjoy writing news stories for Science World, a Scholastic classroom magazine, and I have written numerous other magazine articles. Titles from my forty-six children’s books have been recommended by the National Science Teacher’s Association, chosen for the IRA/CBC Children’s Choices Reading List, named a Notable Social Studies Trade Book for Young People by the National Council for the Social Studies and the Children’s Book Council, and named as Best Children’s Books of the Year by the Children’s Book Commitee at Bank Street College.
I am a proud member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators and the Massachusetts Reading Association. I am also on the board of the Greater Boston Reading Council.
